Description:
Gut rehab of a second floor in a 2 century old home. The original layout or room function is hard to determine and the plan subject to change but the idea is to create a guest bedroom with an office area and a master suite with large bath. To do this we had to dismantle an existing bath in a low ceiling alcove and plumb in the new bath through the floor (so as not to destroy the recently refinished ceiling below).

Begun in April, work was steady until July when I had several trips planned.

Challenges included:

  • Tearing out old horsehair plaster and lath walls.
  • Removing old knob and tube wiring and metal sheathed cable.
  • Adding laundry hookups in the basement
  • Ducting a range hood on the first floor through second floor and out the attic
  • Getting debris out and materials through windows (the narrow winding staircase presented a problem).
